My Best Time Guesses
Every project is different. In my experience, these time ranges are typical. The main factors that determine our timing are decision making speed, number of items you own, and how much homework you complete.
Clothing 4-12 Hours
Books 3-8 Hours
Paperwork 3-8 Hours
Bathroom(s) 2-6 Hours
Kitchen 6-10 Hours
Garage or Basement 4-12 Hours
How Sessions Work
In Person Organizing
The majority of people who work with me choose in person sessions. A 4 hour session is the sweet spot for most: long enough for us to really pull things apart and make a change, and also short enough that decision fatigue (and just plain fatigue) doesn’t become an issue.
In a typical session, we’ll work straight through with only a quick snack break in the middle. This is why you see sessions available in the morning and afternoon, but never at lunch time or dinner time.
Here’s how a typical session plays out:
10 minutes
Update me on your homework progress and any key life events since our last session.
~2 hours
Dive in! We’re making piles, making decisions, and moving things around.
10 minutes
Snack break. Usually this is an educational moment for organizing concepts and reconnecting to the big picture of your project.
~90 minutes
Dive in! We’re making piles, making decisions, and moving things around.
10 minutes
Schedule and plan your specific homework project(s) and our next session.
Virtual Organizing
Virtual sessions work well in a few different situations:
You live too far away for me to drive to you.
You have already finished your organizing project with me, and you want maintenance support and accountability.
You are a dedicated Do-It-Yourself-er, either because you love DIY or for budget reasons.
I typically recommend 1 hour sessions when we’re working virtually. What we do during that time depends on what you need most. Here are some examples of what I’ve covered with people virtually:
Choosing an organizing method
Outlining and scheduling an organizing project
Clarifying your ideal lifestyle/ project goal
Deciding what to keep/ discard
Identifying donation/ discarding options
Developing a household chore agreement
The things I hear most from my virtual clients are:
“I would never have thought of that!”
“What’s making the biggest difference is the accountability.”
